Data & Comparison
PDF compression levels explained
Image resolution targets apply to ordinary PDFs. Scanned text is part of the image and can lose sharpness. Forms and other advanced features use lossless compression; actual savings depend on the file.
| Compression Level | Resolution (DPI) | Image detail | File size | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🔥 Maximum | 72 DPI |
Lower
|
Depends on content | Email attachments, messaging apps |
| ⭐ Recommended | 150 DPI |
Balanced
|
Depends on content | Web uploads, file sharing, cloud storage |
| 👍 Low compression | 300 DPI |
Higher
|
Depends on content | Professional printing, archiving |
| No compression | Original |
Unchanged
|
Original | Legal documents, original archiving |

When to use each level
Choosing the right compression
📩 Sending via email?
Use Maximum compression. Most email providers limit attachments to 10–25 MB. Check the actual output against your attachment limit. Scanned text and images may become softer at 72 DPI.
🌐 Uploading to a website?
Use Recommended. 150 DPI balances image detail and file size; inspect small scanned text before sharing. Perfect for forms, reports and documents shared via Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer.
📷 Sending to a printer?
Use Low compression. Keeps images at 300 DPI which is the standard print resolution. Review the result before printing. If no smaller safe result is available, the original file is returned.
📄 Legal or archival document?
Keep your original copy. PDFs with digital signatures or archival information are returned unchanged. Forms, links and other advanced features use lossless compression.

Savings depend on the file. Image-heavy PDFs may shrink substantially; already optimized PDFs may not shrink. A larger result is never returned.
Selectable text is retained. Text inside scanned images can become softer when image resolution is reduced. Review small print after compression.
